Soil: Your Ultimate Water Reservoir – Tapping the Potential

Mr. John Ferguson, Nature's Way Resources Owner & Soil Scientist

HARC • 8801 Gosling Road

Landscaping irrigation in our area accounts for more than 50% of the drinking water that we use during the growing season.  The effective application of modern soil science, however, can drastically reduce this demand. Mr. Ferguson will talk about soil health and water conservation, plus how to create a greener, healthier landscape. Increasing a soil’s organic matter by a mere 3% allows an acre of that soil to store about 120,000 gallons of water within its top 18 inches. Individuals who integrate basic soil fundamentals into their landscaping experience better results, a thicker, greener lawn and healthier shrubs and flowers, with lower installation and maintenance costs.

Mr. John Ferguson has over 40 years of business experience. He founded and owns Natural Waste Solutions, dba Nature’s Way Resources, a Houston-based recycling company that specializes producing high-quality compost, mulch and soil mixes.  He holds a M.S. degree in Physics and Geology and is a licensed Soil Scientist in Texas.

Children and students welcome. • This event is free.

After the Storm: Infrastructure Resilience Needs a Modern Touch

Lisa Gonzales, President and CEO of HARC

Lecture will be at HARC • 8801 Gosling Road

Our rapidly-growing region has been impacted by numerous flood, hurricane and drought events over the last decade, including three massive storms in the last three years alone. Science tells us that the future will likely bring more of the same. There are many resilience and adaptation strategies that include both gray and green infrastructure. Adoption of these strategies requires a new way of thinking, regional coordination on a number of levels, and development of new mechanisms to fund regional resilience efforts.

As President and Chief Executive Officer of the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC), Ms. Gonzales is responsible for the strategic direction of HARC and its research programs, which are designed to facilitate the sustainable management of air, energy and water resources. She is also active in research focusing on the analysis and dissemination of data concerning the health and productivity of Texas Gulf Coast bays, estuaries and watersheds.
